Table of Contents
The Required Data Notice Loop
When Microsoft AutoUpdate (MAU) is launched for the first time, users typically see a Required Data Notice dialog, which provides information about what data from Microsoft AutoUpdate is sent to Microsoft.
This is normally a one-time display acknowledged by the user by clicking OK.
Intune Policy To Suppress The Message
If you don’t want your users to see this Required Data Notice dialog for Microsoft AutoUpdate, you can suppress the message using the Intune settings catalog policy for macOS. This policy has two available settings, as shown in the following screenshot.
Clicking the “Learn More” link will reveal more information about the setting from an article last updated on 22.07.2024. Regardless of which value you set, the dialog will not be shown to your users, and only the required data will be sent.
Still, two possible values are documented, and you might typically select the option that offers the most.
The Challenging Data Notice Loop
Recently, the Microsoft AutoUpdate application running on MacOS has changed, resulting in a loop of the required data notice for users if you configure your policy with what seemed to be the most inclusive setting at the time.
Here’s what happens: The user receives the message for the first time and clicks OK on the message, and the application sets the value to RequiredDataOnly. However, the policy from Intune then updates to the configured value RequiredAndOptionalData, which the application no longer recognizes. As a result, the user sees the popup window again and clicks OK. Guess what—this creates a recurring loop.
Finding A Solution For The Required Data Notice Loop
Looking at an alternative Microsoft source, updated on 22.07.2024 as the other mentioned post, I noticed only one accepted value was listed🤔. The old tempting value “RequiredAndOptionalData” was gone.
There was also a note in this article describing that the mentioned value has been deprecated.
Solving The Data Notice Loop
Although the value has been deprecated, it is still available in the settings catalog for macOS on Intune Service Release 2407. The workaround is to change your policy from the value “Acknowledge – send required and optional data” to the only accepted value “Acknowledge – send required data”.
Once this new setting bites at your MacOS devices, end users are released from the MacOS data notice loop.
Summary
Microsoft Intune is becoming a highly attractive management solution for macOS. Previously, I’ve discussed new services like Universal Print for macOS, which is included in your Microsoft license and makes managing macOS as seamless as managing your Windows systems. While taking these leaps in the macOS management landscape, some issues may arise, as we saw in this post. Therefore, keeping pace and staying current with your configuration is crucial. In the ever-evolving world of Microsoft 365 cloud computing, staying updated is the key to smooth sailing.
